Staff profiles - intelligence collection

“Although the work can be challenging and relentless, it is incredibly fulfilling.”

Graduating from university was a major event for the whole family because I was the first in my family to do so. Joining the community was a major achievement for me personally. I entered the organisation at graduate level. After only a few short months I received specialist training on some of our unique tools. Although the training was challenging, it was hugely rewarding and gave me the skills for the operational career I now have.

Problem-solving and building relationships are key aspects of my role. Although the work can be challenging and relentless, it is incredibly fulfilling. I enjoy working with colleagues who are professional and committed to our mission, and many have become friends over the years.

I feel proud to be entrusted my work of ensuring ongoing security and prosperity for today’s New Zealanders and the generations to come.

“You get to work with a great bunch of people who strive to be the best they can be. They’re proud of their role in keeping New Zealand and New Zealanders safe.”

Like many New Zealanders, I began my working life overseas. When I returned, I spent several years working for an airline – dealing with people from all walks of life, I quickly learnt not to judge a book by its cover. I really needed to listen to what people were telling me, ask clarifying questions, and solve problems.

My job at the NZSIS is to assess if people are suitable to access classified information and be trusted with it. This requires advanced interpersonal skills, an ability to build rapport quickly, an eye for detail, and an ability to have difficult conversations. Using technology to analyse information is also important, as is a need to comply with legislation and policy.

The NZSIS offers you plenty of opportunity to use and develop your unique interpersonal skills. You get to work with a great bunch of people who strive to be the best they can be. They’re proud of their role in keeping New Zealand and New Zealanders safe.
